Lambert's Café
About this place
Plenty of restaurants hand you bread. Lambert's Café throws it. A server pushes a cart through the dining room, calls out that hot rolls are coming, and sends one flying across the room to your outstretched hands. It is the reason the Ozark restaurant at 1800 W State Hwy J turns up on road-trip lists, and it is the first thing most first-timers mention on the way out the door.
The story goes back to Sikeston, Missouri, where Earl Lambert started the café in 1942 with help from his family. In 1976, his son Norman took over management and began the roll-throwing tradition. The Ozark location, often called Lambert's Café II, opened on March 7, 1994, and carries the same format forward.
Pass-Arounds: The Real Hook
Throwed rolls are the spectacle, but the pass-arounds are what keep people full. Staff walk the room with big pans of side dishes and keep offering helpings to every table, so the sides keep coming for as long as you keep saying yes. This is Southern and country cooking at its most plain-spoken, built around generous plates and the idea that nobody should leave hungry.
The better strategy is to pace yourself. Order your main plate, accept the first round of rolls, and treat the pass-arounds as a series of small servings rather than an all-at-once pile. Sauce for the rolls, including sorghum, is part of the table ritual.
Who Goes and What to Expect
This is a big, noisy, cheerful room built for families and groups. Birthdays, road-trippers, church groups and locals all share the same long dining floor. Expect a wait at peak lunch and dinner times, especially in summer and on weekends, so arriving a little ahead of the main rush saves time.
The café opens at 10:30 AM, and it is a good idea to call 417-581-7655 for closing times and any seasonal changes before you drive in.
